Remarks
- Kent Peters on "A New Use for e-link"
Dear e-link Readers,
Linda, Deacon Jim, and I have been producing, writing, directing,
and hosting a one-hour program on Catholic Radio of San Diego, KCEO
AM 1000, for the past 18 weeks. We're on each Wednesday at 6:00
p.m.
It would be fair to say that the production process for the show,
"Setting Things Right," absorbs a significant amount of our time.
Funny thing, though, we're not sure how many listeners are tuning in
each week.
KCEO 1000 primarily broadcasts business programming, and we're just
not sure how
many
of those listeners "don't touch that dial" at 6:00 p.m. when the
content shifts to Catholic programming for two hours. We hope that
many of those listeners care as much about their
"Eternal" 401(k)s as they do their worldly ones.
We share this as a way to introduce an new use for OSMe-link.
Starting this week, in addition to the regular monthly e-link
bulletin you've been receiving, we will be sending a very short
announcement each Wednesday morning with the content of "Setting
Things Right" for that evening at 6:00 p.m. We hope it will serve
as a reminder to those who may want to tune in.
In addition to the business programming
listeners
that hang with us, we hope to grow a significant listening audience
of Catholics and non-Catholics alike who are eager to lean more
about the moral/practical side of Catholicism. From saving the
lives of unborn children to befriending those in prison, our call to
reach out to and to advocate for the marginalized in our midst is
not an option. As the Catechism says, "everyone should look upon
his neighbor (without any exception) as ‘another self,' above all
bearing in mind his life and the means necessary for living it with
dignity."
Join us each Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. on KCEO AM 1000 or online at:
www.CatholicRadioOfSandiego.com.
Blessings,
Kent

Most e-link readers are very familiar with Fr. Frank Pavone. Some,
however, may not be acquainted with Dr. Alveda King. Her biography
follows.

Dr. King currently serves as a Pastoral Associate and Director of
African-American Outreach for Priests for Life and Gospel of Life
Ministries. She is also a voice for the Silent No More Awareness
Campaign, sharing her testimony of two abortions, God’s forgiveness,
and healing.
The daughter of the late civil rights activist Rev. A.D. King and
his wife Naomi Barber King, Alveda grew up in the civil rights
movement led by her uncle, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Her family
home in Birmingham, Alabama, was bombed, as was her father’s church
office in Louisville, Kentucky. Alveda was jailed during the open
housing movement. She sees the prolife movement as a continuation of
the civil rights struggle.
Dr. King is a former college professor and served in the Georgia
State House of Representatives. She is a recipient of the Life
Prize Award (2011), the Cardinal John O’Connor Pro-Life Hall of Fame
Award (2011) from the Legatus organization and the Civil Rights

Daughter of St. Gianna Receives Warm Welcome in San Diego
On Sunday, July 17, faithful from San Diego and as far away as Los
Angeles gathered at St. Therese of Carmel Church to hear the
youngest daughter of St. Gianna Molla
speak
about her saint mother. The church was packed as more than thousand
people listened and learned about the life and virtues of St. Gianna
who was a dedicated wife, mother and physician. She died in 1962
from complications upon giving birth to her youngest daughter,
Gianna Emanuela.
The program was organized by St. Gianna Physician’s Guild based in
San Diego, as part of a 15 day national tour of lectures and
programs promoting the work of the Guild and its outreach to teach
about St. Gianna. The program began with a Solemn Benediction
presided over by Salvatore Cordileone, Bishop of Oakland,
California. The choir of St. Therese of Carmel parish sang
beautiful and inspiring hymns that brought tears to the eyes of
many.
Following Benediction St. Gianna Physician’s Guild founder and
president, Thomas McKenna, introduced Dr. Gianna Emanuela Molla who
he has known for many years. He began by reminding the faithful of
the definition of a saint, “A person who
practiced
virtue to a heroic degree” and why it is important to learn about
their lives. Mr. McKenna also called attention to the fact that
Gianna Emanuela and her two siblings represent the first time in
history that a saint was canonized and children were attended the
canonization of their parent.
Gianna Emanuela then recounted her mother’s story and practice of
virtue. She began by saying: “First of all I wish to thank God, the
Virgin Mary and my beloved saint Mother, for the gift of Life, which
is really everything. I can tell you, I would not be here with you
if I had not been loved so much. Life is really the most important,
the greatest, the most precious and the most sacred gift we always
ought to honour, respect and defend.” She mentioned this because
when St. Gianna was
two
months pregnant with her she developed a benign tumor in her
uterus. The physicians recommended a hysterectomy which would have
taken the life of the baby but St. Gianna opted for a riskier
operations to remove the tumor which spared the life of her child.
Throughout the program several relics of St. Gianna were
displayed near the altar: a pair of gloves the saint wore, a
specialized stethoscope which she used to listen to the
heartbeat of babies in their mother’s wombs, along with a lock of
hair from the saint. Following the presentation Bishop Cordileone
gave a blessing with this relic. The ceremony concluded with the
church resounding in Holy God We Praise Thy Name.
Delicious refreshments were provided by volunteers from St. Therese
Church and people stayed for more than two hours for the opportunity
to greet Gianna Emanuela and pray and ask favors before the relics
of her saint mother.

Media Frustration on Obama Birth Control Mandate
Greg Schleppenbach - Nebraska Catholic Conference
I'm finding the "dialogue" in the media coverage of the Obama birth
control mandate to be extremely frustrating...even by some
spokespersons from our side (none of which are USCCB). No one is
pointing out that the overwhelming body of evidence (at least from
what I can tell) does not support the assertion that greater access
to artificial contraception will reduce unintended pregnancies. And
yet this is the basis of the Institute of Medicine's (IOM)
recommendation. I actually downloaded the full report and read the
section recommending mandated artificial contraception and found
only two studies cited as evidence that greater access to artificial
contraception reduces unintended pregnancies. And one was done by a
staffer at the Alan Guttmacher Institute.
Conversely, Richard Doerflinger and Susan Wills of the USCCB have
compiled an overwhelming body of research (conducted by artificial
contraception proponents) that shows little or no reduction in
unintended pregnancies and abortion following increased access to
artificial contraception. I've combined a couple of their documents
(found on the USCCB website) and added some recent research in a
document that has been placed on the Nebraska Catholic Conference
website:
http://www.nebcathcon.org/Family%20planning%20fact%20sheet.pdf.
I keep searching for more evidence from artificial
contraception proponents to back up their assertion but can't find
it. Am I missing something here?
Finally, I'm also frustrated by the media's glossing over the
dissenting opinion of an IOM committee member who expressed strong
concern that there was not a serious or substantive review of the
data/research to arrive at these recommendations and that ideology
seemed to be driving the recommendations. I can verify that for one
of the IOM committee members, Dr. Magda Peck from the Univesity of
Nebraska Medical Center. She has been a long-time board member for
Planned Parenthood of the Heartland having served recently as board
chair. I've mentioned this to local media but, alas, they yawn.
USCCB: HHS Mandate for
Contraceptive and Abortifacient Drugs Violates Conscience Rights
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)
sharply criticized a new HHS “preventive services” mandate requiring
private health plans to cover female surgical sterilization and all
drugs and devices approved by the FDA as contraceptives, including
drugs which can attack a developing unborn child before and after
implantation in the mother’s womb.
“Although this new rule gives the agency the discretion to
authorize a ‘religious’ exemption, it is so narrow as to exclude
most Catholic social service agencies and healthcare providers,”
said Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston and
chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities.
“For example, under the new rule our institutions would be free
to act in accord with Catholic teaching on life and procreation only
if they were to stop hiring and serving non-Catholics,” Cardinal
DiNardo continued. “Could the federal government possibly intend to
pressure Catholic institutions to cease providing health care,
education and charitable services to the general public? Health
care reform should expand access to basic health care for all, not
undermine that goal.”
“The Administration’s failure to create a meaningful conscience
exemption to the preventive services mandate underscores the need
for Congress to approve the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act,”
the Cardinal said. That bill (H.R. 1179), introduced by Reps. Jeff
Fortenberry (R-NE) and Dan Boren (D-OK), would prevent mandates
under the new health reform law from undermining rights of
conscience.
Cardinal DiNardo added: “Catholics are not alone in
conscientiously objecting to this mandate. The drugs that Americans
would be forced to subsidize under the new rule include Ella, which
was approved by the FDA as an ‘emergency contraceptive’ but can act
like the abortion drug RU-486. It can abort an established
pregnancy weeks after conception. The pro-life majority of
Americans – Catholics and others – would be outraged to learn that
their premiums must be used for this purpose.”
“HHS says the intent of its ‘preventive services’ mandate is to
help ‘stop health problems before they start,’ said Cardinal DiNardo.
“But pregnancy is not a disease, and children are not a ‘health
problem’ – they are the next generation of Americans.”
“It’s now more vital than ever that Congress pass the Respect for
Rights of Conscience Act to close the gaps in conscience protection
in the new health care reform act, so employers and employees alike
will have the freedom to choose health plans in accordance with
their deeply held moral and religious beliefs.”
In a July 22 letter supporting the bill, Cardinal DiNardo wrote:
“Those who sponsor, purchase and issue health plans should not be
forced to violate their deeply held moral and religious convictions
in order to take part in the health care system or provide for the
needs of their families or their employees. To force such an
unacceptable choice would be as much a threat to universal access to
health care as it is to freedom of conscience.”
The full text of Cardinal DiNardo’s letter is available online at
www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/religious-liberty/upload/respect-for-rights-of-conscience-act-cardinal-dinardo-letter-to-congress-hr1179-07-22-11.pdf.
Cardinal DiNardo also addressed the Institute of Medicine’s
recommendations on preventive services for women in a July 19
statement:www.usccb.org/comm/archives/2011/11-143.shtml.
