Remarks - From Rosemary Benefield,
Director of Rachel's Hope - "Healing Family" a Must Read
"Healing
Family" is Fr. Jerry Bevilacqua's new book highlighting the
essential
elements involved
in experiencing authentic healing within broken families. I was
honored to be asked to write the Introduction to "Healing
Family." You may have heard about "Healing the Family Tree,"
an inter-generational healing program offered by Fr.
Bevilacqua's Holy Spirit Ministry. In a very concrete way, the
program I direct, Rachel's Hope, fits squarely into the vision
of "Healing the Family Tree," as healing the wounds of abortion
so often radically reduces the pain passed down to future
generations by healing the present generation. "Healing Family"
helps meet the needs of those in this generation who are healing
after an abortion. This is accomplished through the experience
of the Original Family, the Holy Trinity.
Below are a few
selections from my Introduction. I offer these to give a sense
of the impact Fr. Jerry's new book could have.
God is good. Life is a struggle. We struggle every day,
sometimes every minute between choosing good or evil, between
being forgiving or holding resentments, between being loving
or being unloving, between choosing God’s will or our own
sinful desires, between following our own moral Godly values
or the values of the world. In all of this, God is good,
loving, merciful, and patient.
My husband (Jim)
and I became involved in Fr. Jerry’s ministry over 25 years
ago. For years, we attended his Bible studies, healing
Masses, were a part of his Fountain of Life community, and
were a part of his prayer teams. We learned about the power
of prayer and praying for people.
The concepts
in this book incorporate much of what Father Jerry taught us
and more. With what we learned we became Spiritual Directors
and both decided to go to school to get Masters Degrees in
Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling. Jim earned his
license as a Marriage and Family therapist and is in private
practice in San Diego. I, on the other hand, with my
additional education and experience as a Registered Nurse, was
led to begin healing ministry for women who have had
abortions, Rachel’s Hope Post-Abortion Healing and
Reconciliation Retreats for Catholic Women.
www.RachelsHope.org
So much of what I have learned under the tutelage of Fr. Jerry
led me into this ministry. Rachel’s Hope is a practical
application of the scriptural, theological, and psychological
principles contained in this manuscript.
“Healing is
mostly about relationships”. pg. 126 “Relationships continue
beyond the grave, because of our shared spiritual nature and
supernatural destiny.” pg.353 “Abortion is perhaps the worst
of broken relationships.” pg. 308. For the post-abortive
woman, her healing takes place as she begins to recognize her
relationship with her child. A major defense mechanism that
women use to cope with the emotions around their abortions are
denial: denial that this is a child, denial that this is her
child. Society refers to her child as a “bloody tissue”, “a
product of conception” or a “fetus”. She thinks that if she
only views her child as such, that she won’t feel the guilt or
remorse. If she can think of her child as a “thing,” then she
doesn’t have to face the reality of what she has destroyed.
“When we feel pain, the temptation is to run away from the
pain, avoid it, ignore it, disassociate, change the subject.”
pg. 182
It is a painful process of recognizing her son’s or daughter’s
humanity and her relationship with that child. Some women
have already regretfully recognized their children. Others
come to that recognition with great tears of shame and pain.
When they acknowledge their child, they express great sorrow
and regret to their child for having aborted them and ask for
their forgiveness. The women come to a place of recognizing
they are a mother to these aborted children.
I encourage the healing of family generations through the use of
this book.
With care to
all,
Rosemary
Benefied

Upcoming Culture-of-Life
Gatherings/Projects
Number 1:
Bishop Brom is asking all parishes to
participate in "Life and Dignity
Sunday," on the weekend of October 30/31, 2010 - What role can you
play? Ask your pastor what you can do that weekend to help support
the effort to register as many Catholics as possible for the
Catholic Legislative Network

Following is the text of a letter from Bishop Brom that will be
distributed through parish bulletins the week before Life and
Dignity Sunday.
An Invitation from Bishop Brom
to
The Lay Faithful in the Diocese of San Diego
Two years ago the bishops of
California decided that it was time to create a Catholic Legislative
Network (CLN) which would inform and allow Catholic laity to be a
powerful voice of gospel clarity and truth in the legislative
process. Now that the infrastructure of the CLN is in place, an
effort is being made to substantially increase the number of network
participants. To do this, each of the twelve dioceses in California
is being asked to sponsor a Life and Dignity Sunday. In the Diocese
of San Diego, I am asking that this take place in all parishes on
the weekend of October 30-31, 2010.
Membership in CLN is an opportunity for clergy
and religious, and especially the laity, to participate in the
mission of Jesus by affecting the legislative process in a way that
will help “to order temporal affairs according to the plan of God”
(Vatican II, LG #31).
Therefore, I am inviting you and everyone in
the diocese with an e-mail address to consider becoming a registered
member of the CLN. This will be possible after all the Masses next
weekend.
I want to be clear about what CLN membership
means:
• A newsletter (Public Policy Insights) is
e-mailed to members on most Fridays.
• Periodic action alerts provide background
information on an issue and then invite members to consider sending
a message to elected representatives.
• The names and e-mail address of CLN members
will never be made available to any other organization or cause.
• Members are always free to discontinue
membership.
With our participation, the Catholic
Legislative Network will enhance the many efforts we make to build a
culture of life and dignity. May San Diego and Our Lady of Refuge
intercede for us.
Sincerely in our Lord,
Robert H. Brom

Bishop of San Diego
Again, what can you do to help with
this effort?
Offer your services on on the weekend of October 30/31 to assist in
the registration process. Volunteers will be stationed that weekend
at exits following all Masses with registration cards. Please
become one of those volunteers.
By now, your parish staff should know who is leading this effort in
your parish. Call your parish office now to share your interest in
making Life and Dignity Sunday a success. If your parish does not
yet have a coordinator for Life and Dignity Sunday, you may want to
volunteer for that temporary position. There is plenty to time to
make the registration drive a true success in your parish.
Two one-hour training sessions for Life and Dignity Suday
coordinators are still available:
1) Thursday, October 14, 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at
the diocesan Pastoral Center, 3888 Paducah Drive in San Diego
2) Friday, October 15, 11:00 a.m. to Noon at St.
Mary Catholic Church, 795 La Brucherie Road in El Centro
Please RSVP for either training by Wednesday, October 13th -
kpeters@diocese-sdiego.org or call in your RSVP to 858-490-8323.
Thanks, the OSM

Second Notice... 40 Days for Life is
nearly at the mid-point and is taking place in two locations - Join
hundreds of prayerful citizens in public witness in front of the
North County Women's Medical Clinic on 120 Craven Road and in front
of Family Planning Associates on Miramar Road, sharing the parking
lot with the Pyramid Building (both groups are to use sidewalks
only)

This Fall, from September
22 through October 31, San Diego County, with two locations,
will join of hundreds of cities gathered together for the largest
and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization in history -- the 40
Days for Life campaign.
40 Days for Life is a
focused pro-life effort that consists of:
- 40 days of
prayer and fasting
- 40 days of peaceful vigil
- 40 days of community outreach
We are praying that, with God's help, this groundbreaking effort
will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city -- and
throughout America.

Take a stand for life!
While all aspects of 40
Days for Life are crucial in our effort to end abortion, the most
visible component is the peaceful prayer vigil outside a local
abortion facility.
You can help make a
life-saving impact by regularly joining one of two vigils either at:
San Marcos Care
Center, 120 Craven Road, San Marcos CA in the
Palomar Pomerado Health
Building - corner of Twin Oaks Valley & Craven Roads and
Family Planning Associates, 7340 Miramar Road
(sharing the parking lot with the Pyramid Building - park on Kenamar
Drive behind the mini-mall and walk through to the sidewalk on
Miramar Road - OK to cross through the parking lot without
loitering)

40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing
local communities the consequences of abortion in their own
neighborhoods, for their own friends and families. It puts into
action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His
plan for the end of abortion in America.
The 40-day campaign
tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform
individuals, communities ... and the entire world. From Noah in the
flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's
resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of
His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge.
Vision and mission
40 Days for Life is a
focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power
through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in
America.
The mission of
the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of
unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and
peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s
favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture
of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Documents
LifeNews.com obtained today reveal the Obama administration
partnered with leading pro-abortion organizations to host an FBI
training seminar in August with the main focus of declaring as
"violent" the free speech activities of pro-life Americans.

On August 25, 2010, the FBI and the United States Department of
Justice co-sponsored a training seminar with Planned Parenthood, the
National Abortion Federation, and the Feminist Majority Foundation.
When information about the seminar, which took place
at FBI headquarters in Portland, Oregon, reached pro-life advocates,
they asked officials for permission to attend and were granted
access to the seminar and the training materials.
FBI and Obama administration officials provided
participants with an 84-page document entitled “Resource Guide:
Violence Against Reproductive Health Care Providers" that contained
print copies of Power Point presentations prepared by the Justice
Department and an analysis of alleged pro-life "violence" prepared
by the pro-abortion groups.
The so-called violence perpetrated by pro-life
advocates mostly contained examples of constitutionally-protected
free speech, including activities such as praying, providing women
outside abortion centers with alternatives information, and peaceful
protesting or picketing.
Matt Bowman, a top attorney at the Alliance Defense
Fund, told LifeNews.com today that the cooperation between the Obama
administration and pro-abortion organizations to target pro-life
free speech should cause alarm.
"The information presented in the seminar raises
serious concerns over the United States government’s treatment of
nonviolent free speech activities as 'violence' subject to
investigation and prosecution," he said.
"Abortionist organizations have long lobbied to use
the law to silence free speech activities. But in this seminar the
FBI and USDOJ included those views in their own training seminar
materials," he added. "This raises serious concerns about the United
States government investigating peaceful, legal free speech activity
in efforts that are ostensibly aimed at violence."
The Obama administration documents, on page 39-41
specifically list the names of pro-life organizations and websites
sponsored by peaceful non-violent groups.
Some of the organizations named in the FBI/DOJ
seminar materials include 40 Days for Life, the ACLJ, Concerned
Women for America, National Right to Life, Priests for Life, and
Students for Life of America.
Julie Abbate of USDOJ, who presented at the seminar,
is the attorney who filed a federal lawsuit in August 2010 against a
pro-life advocate solely for leafleting while, allegedly, one time,
crossing a driveway in front of an abortion center.
"The lawsuit is further evidence that USDOJ is
putting its resources into prosecuting peaceful activity on public
sidewalks, rather than violence," Bowman said.
Looking at some of the examples of pro-life free
speech pegged as violence, pages 5 and 20 discuss and tabulate
“violence statistics” including “disruption,” but define
“disruption” as including “picketing,” which accounts for almost 90%
of all the incidents listed in the FBI, USDOJ materials.
An entire section of the document is devoted to laws
that address non-violent picketing in residential locations, at
pages 77-84, as do the FMF surveys relied on in “The History of
Violence,” page 11.
“The History of Clinic Violence” includes “the use
of huge anti-abortion posters” on college and university campuses,
and it identifies “boycotts against abortion providers" as another
example. It complains of “the ability to publish almost anything on
the Internet,” and of free speech lawsuits. These are all summarized
as “The landscape of violence and harassment aimed at abortion
providers.”
On page 67, the Justice Department says prosecuting
federal law includes “gathering evidence” on “Leaflets or pamphlets”
that pro-life targets are distributing, and “Signs [the] suspect was
carrying.”
The documents indicate Planned Parenthood "maintain[s]
a database of names, photos, license plate etc. of anti-choice
groups and individuals” and that they work “proactively” with local
law enforcement.
Pages 18 and 19 summarize an FMF survey discussing
“intimidation,” and includes the distribution of leaflets labeled
“Pamphlets Targeting Staff,” and any “noise disturbance.” These
would include leaflets that warn women that specific abortion
practitioners have killed women in botched abortions. This free
speech activity constitutes a significant percent of the survey
activities labeled “intimidation.”
The joint Obama administration-pro-abortion FBI
training seminar follows on the heels of the Department of Homeland
Security engaging in several instances of tracking or monitoring
pro-life advocates and concluding they represent a security threat.
Last year, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano included
pro-lifers in a report on domestic terrorism.
In the document, the Department of Homeland Security
warned law officials about a supposed rise in "rightwing extremist
activity," saying the poor economy and presence of a black president
could spark problems.
According to the Washington Times, a footnote
attached to the nine-page report from the Homeland Security Office
of Intelligence and Analysis said the activities of pro-life
advocates is included in "rightwing extremism in the United States.”
"It may include groups and individuals that are
dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or
immigration," the warning said.
After that, in May 2009, details emerged about a
terrorism dictionary the administration had put together in March.
The Domestic Extremism Lexicon called pro-life advocates violent and
claims they employ racist overtones in engaging in criminal actions.
In February 2010, DOHS admitted it conducted an
improper threat assessment of pro-life advocates in Wisconsin before
an expected rally last year in response to the University of
Wisconsin Hospital board decided to allow abortions.
In February 2009, an Oklahoma man with a homemade
pro-life sign on his vehicle was pulled over and harassed by police
for allegedly making a threat against the president.
