Dear e-link Subscriber,

As you know, Maria Valencia is the new administrative assistant in the OSM supporting Linda, Jim, and Kent.  She also fills in for the Pastoral Center main receptionist on a regular basis during the lunch hour and at other breaks.

Having reached the two-month experience mark, we asked Maria to share some of her thoughts for the "Remarks" section on what it's like to serve an office that is engaged in such a variety of issues and acitivites.  See her comments below.

As always, we remind current members and inform new members that past e-link bulletins and this current bulletin can be viewed at www.osmelink.org.

Remarks - From Maria Valencia, Administrative Assistant in the Office for Social Ministry

Serving in the OSM

Time flies!  I have already been working in the Office of Social Ministry for two months.  When I applied for the Administrative Assistant position, I pictured working in an open and peaceful environment where I could share my beliefs with co-workers.  I was definitely on target.  Since the beginning, the entire staff of the Pastoral Center has welcomed me with open arms. They really care about me, which was really no surprise.  What is really amazing, though, is the passion, dedication, and faith of people who work on behalf of causes that seem almost impossible to accomplish.  Of course, I am talking of my supervisors, Linda, Kent, and Jim.

I think they have something special that makes them love and believe in what they do - defend the most vulnerable: the unborn, the elderly, crime victims, immigrants, inmates, and so many others who cannot defend themselves.

For ordinary people, engaging in those causes is like going against the world.  I wonder what motivates my supervisors.  They may not say it, but I am sure that they have been chosen by God to do his work, and they are inspired by the Holy Spirit.  They, in turn, are blessed to work with so many others, and by joining together both efforts and prayers, the world will be changed.  I am very pleased to be working in the Office for Social Ministry, and I have so much yet to learn.   I ask the Lord that I will, one day, have the same passion and love that I see all around me so that I, too, can be part of changing our broken world.

Thank you and God bless you,

Maria

This fall, from September 22 through October 31, San Diego County, with two locations, will join of hundreds of cities gathered together for the largest and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization in history -- the 40 Days for Life campaign.

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life effort that consists of:

- 40 days of prayer and fasting
- 40 days of peaceful vigil
- 40 days of community outreach

We are praying that, with God's help, this groundbreaking effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city -- and throughout America.

Take a stand for life!

While all aspects of 40 Days for Life are crucial in our effort to end abortion, the most visible component is the peaceful prayer vigil outside a local abortion facility.

You can help make a life-saving impact by regularly joining one of two vigils either at:

San Marcos Care Center, 120 Craven Road, San Marcos CA in the Palomar Pomerado Health Building - corner of Twin Oaks Valley & Craven Roads and

Family Planning Associates, 7340 Miramar Road (sharing the parking lot with the Pyramid Building - park on Kenamar Drive behind the mini-mall and walk through to the sidewalk on Miramar Road - OK to cross through the parking lot without loitering)

40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families.  It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America.

The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities ... and the entire world.  From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge.

Vision and mission

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in America.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40 day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.

The Office for Social Ministry and the Office for Marriage and Family Life are co-sponsoring a webinar on disability and pre-natal diagnosis at the Pastoral Center on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. - refreshments provided

You may have heard that in some medical facilities when an ultrasound is scheduled for a woman over the age of 40, an abortion appointment is also penciled in, just in case a disability such as Down's Syndrome is discovered.  You may also know that, today, more than nine out of ten pre-born children diagnosed with Down's Syndrome have their lives ended in utero.  Yes, that is a frightening statistic - eugenics, pure and simple.

Please download a pdf version of the event webinar flyer and attend this important event on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Diocesan Pastoral Center in San Diego.

Would you also please send the link to this flyer to those in your e-mail data base who would likely want to attend, especially those in the medical community?  We thank you in advance for your Help.

Thank you so much for assisting the OSM and OMFL in promoting this important National Catholic Partnership on Disability webinar.

Number 7:

Bishop Brom is asking all parishes to participate in "Life and Dignity Sunday," on the weekend of October 30/31, 2010 - Ask what you can do that weekend to help support the effort to register as many Catholics as  possible for the Catholic Legislative Network

Following is the text of a letter from Bishop Brom that will be distributed through parish bulletins the week before Life and Dignity Sunday.

An Invitation from Bishop Brom

to

The Lay Faithful in the Diocese of San Diego

Two years ago the bishops of California decided that it was time to create a Catholic Legislative Network (CLN) which would inform and allow Catholic laity to be a powerful voice of gospel clarity and truth in the legislative process.  Now that the infrastructure of the CLN is in place, an effort is being made to substantially increase the number of network participants.  To do this, each of the twelve dioceses in California is being asked to sponsor a Life and Dignity Sunday.  In the Diocese of San Diego, I am asking that this take place in all parishes on the weekend of October 30-31, 2010.

Membership in CLN is an opportunity for clergy and religious, and especially the laity, to participate in the mission of Jesus by affecting the legislative process in a way that will help “to order temporal affairs according to the plan of God” (Vatican II, LG #31).

Therefore, I am inviting you and everyone in the diocese with an e-mail address to consider becoming a registered member of the CLN.  This will be possible after all the Masses next weekend.

I want to be clear about what CLN membership means:

• A newsletter (Public Policy Insights) is e-mailed to members on most Fridays.

• Periodic action alerts provide background information on an issue and then invite members to consider sending a message to elected representatives.

• The names and e-mail address of CLN members will never be made available to any other organization or cause.

• Members are always free to discontinue membership.

With our participation, the Catholic Legislative Network will enhance the many efforts we make to build a culture of life and dignity. May San Diego and Our Lady of Refuge intercede for us.

Sincerely in our Lord,

Robert H. Brom

Bishop of San Diego

What can you do to help with this effort?

Offer your services on on the weekend of October 30/31 to assist in the registration process.  Volunteers will be stationed that weekend at exits following all Masses with registration cards.  Please become one of those volunteers.

By the end of the first week in October, your parish staff members should know who is leading this effort in your parish.  Call your parish office at that time to share your interest in making Life and Dignity Sunday a true success.

Thanks, the OSM

Number 1: Mother of Life Conference a Huge Success

Priests, Politician and Pro-Life Advocates Headline "Mother of Life" Conference

By Denis Grasska

SAN DIEGO – A line-up of high-profile presenters, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, headlined the first annual Mother of Life Conference.

About 1,800 people attended the conference, which was held Aug. 14 at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena. The event was sponsored by the San Diego chapter of the Knights of Columbus.

In a speech co-presented with his wife, Callista, Gingrich criticized the secularization of American society, which he suggested is occurring despite the opposition of a majority of Americans.

“We believe that each individual is endowed by our Creator with the right to life,” he said, “and that no government can stand in the way of our pursuit of freedom and full human dignity.”

In their presentation, the Gingriches made several references to their new documentary, “Nine Days That Changed the World,” which was screened immediately after their presentation.

The film reflects on the significance of Pope John Paul II’s historic pilgrimage to his native Poland in 1979. His nine-day visit is believed by many to have played a pivotal role in the fall of Soviet communism.

The former house speaker, who recently entered into full communion with the Catholic Church, drew parallels between secular elites in contemporary America and the atheistic, communist government that once controlled Poland.

“Our elites fail to recognize the irony that our own courts are as fully anti-religious as any institution in the Polish dictatorship,” he said, “and our elite culture is as frightened of Christ and the cross as any secular group in past radical regimes.”

Other conference speakers included Jesuit Father Mitch Pacwa, founder of Ignatius Productions and a popular host on the EWTN television and radio network; Lila Rose, president of Live Action, a nonprofit organization that uses “new media” to expose the corruption of the abortion industry; Leslie Brunolli, who serves as San Diego regional coordinator for the Silent No More Awareness campaign; and Father Thomas Euteneuer, president of Human Life International.

Father Pacwa focused his presentation on the destructive legacy of three U.S. Supreme Court decisions – Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) and Roe v. Wade (1973) – “each of which,” he said, “was an attack on human dignity, a moving away from our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution.”

The first two decisions denied the full human dignity of African Americans, while the third created a constitutional right to abort unborn children.

Because God created human beings in His image and likeness, Father Pacwa said, “[human] dignity is not something that the state can give, nor can the state take it away.”

As he concluded his presentation, he noted that Catholicism has the most adherents of any faith in the United States, making Catholics well-positioned “to call our nation back to its founding principles.”

Rose, a 22-year-old pro-life activist, discussed the results of her hidden-camera exposes of corruption at Planned Parenthood clinics throughout the country. Presenting herself as an underage girl impregnated by an older male, she has documented clinic employees encouraging her to lie about her age.

Rose’s videos, which can be seen at www.liveaction.org, have received national attention. As a result of the videos, certain Planned Parenthood affiliates have been investigated and have lost their taxpayer subsidies.

“Together, we can face the death that is around us and build this culture of life,” Rose said. Through working together, “we are going to reach our goal of creating a country where every life is protected by love and by law, where every unborn child is seen with dignity and with respect.”

Brunolli, flanked by other post-abortive women, told the story of her own abortion and the decades of pain that followed.

“I stand here today with my sisters in Christ, who also made the choice to have an abortion,” Brunolli said. “We thought that our choice would be a solution to our immediate problems. … [But] we have suffered spiritually, physically and emotionally because of our choice.”

After more than 20 years of grief and shame, she attended a post-abortion healing retreat sponsored by Rachel’s Hope in San Diego. Through Silent No More Awareness, a project of Priests for Life and Anglicans for Life, she and others speak publicly about their experiences with abortion.

Father Euteneuer, who delivered a presentation of his own, also celebrated the closing Mass. He devoted his homily to the conference’s namesake. He said Christians “impoverish their Christianity” when they fail to recognize the Blessed Mother’s importance.

“My friends, don’t ever underestimate the power of Mary to help you in your lives and in your work as Christians,” he said. “You have many souls to touch, and Mary’s there to be with you.”

Plans are already underway to bring the conference back for a second year, said Kamal Alsawaf, president of the San Diego chapter of the Knights of Columbus. Organizers are discussing the possibility of a more diverse line-up of speakers, which might include non-Catholic Christians as well as African American and Hispanic Catholic presenters.

"Marked for Death" - the Melissa Ohden Story

episode 1

http://www.facinglife.tv/episode/season_4/episode_20/episode_420.html

episode 2

http://www.facinglife.tv/episode/season_4/episode_21/episode_421.html

Melissa Ohden’s tale of surviving an abortion is remarkable. In part one of this two-part series, we’ll hear her tale of survival, learn the details involved in a saline abortion, and find out how Melissa’s tragic history turned into a story of love and adoption.

In the summer of 1977, Melissa’s mother was admitted to St. Luke’s hospital in Sioux City, Iowa with the intention of aborting her unborn daughter.  But the saline abortion attempt failed and baby Melissa was delivered alive, unbeknownst to the abortionist.  A few doctors and nurses finally noticed that Melissa was making small movements and noises and they quickly went to work on saving Melissa’s life.  Having survived the abortion attempt on her life, baby Melissa still required intense medical care.

Linda and Ron Cross were already the parents of one adopted daughter when they decided the time had come to have another child.  They first saw Melissa when she was only one month old.  According to Linda, it was love at first sight.  Linda and Ron adopted Melissa and were able to take her home only a couple months later.  Despite initial concerns regarding her future, Melissa thrived in the loving home of her new family.

Melissa’s story of survival is remarkable, considering the damage a saline abortion inflicts on an unborn child. Dr. Jonathan Taylor is a Doctor of Osteopathy with Creighton University and a former OB/GYN.  He describes the saline abortion procedure and outlines the effects the chemical solution has on unborn children.  Due to the amount of survivors, saline abortions are no longer practiced.  But that hasn’t stopped abortionists from inventing new late-term procedures.

New Local/Regional Events and Gatherings

If you are planning an event that falls within the mission of social ministry, send the particulars four to five weeks in advance to the Office for Social Ministry via e-mail, osmelink@diocese-sdiego.org.  The OSM reserves the right to publish or not to publish any proposed event information.  We hope this will assist your local efforts to rebuild a culture of life.

Prop. 8 Ruling Ignores Precedent, Evidence and Common Sense

By Edwin Meese III
Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Even some who support same-sex marriage worry that, in striking down California's voter-approved proposition defining marriage as between one man and one woman, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker went too far. They are right -- and not the only ones who should be concerned. Walker's ruling is indefensible as a matter of law wholly apart from its result.

By refusing to acknowledge binding Supreme Court precedent, substantial evidence produced at trial that was contrary to the holding and plain common sense, the ruling exhibits none of the requirements of a traditional decision. This opinion is arbitrary and capricious, and its alarming legal methodology and overtly policy-driven tenor are too extreme to stand.

Regardless of whether one agrees with the result, structurally sound opinions always confront binding legal precedent. Walker's is a clear exception because the U.S. Supreme Court has spoken on whether a state's refusal to authorize same-sex marriage violates the equal protection and due process clauses of the 14th Amendment. In 1972, Baker v. Nelson, a case over whether Minnesota violated the Constitution by issuing marriage licenses only to opposite-sex couples, was unanimously thrown out on the merits, for lack of a substantial federal question. The Supreme Court's action establishes a binding precedent in favor of Proposition 8. But Judge Walker's ruling doesn't mention Baker, much less attempt to distinguish it or accept its findings.

During a trial, litigants from both sides introduce various types of evidence, including witness testimony, documentary evidence and legal opinions that involve "judicial notice" of certain well-known or legally controlling facts. Sound judicial opinions consider the facts and evidence on both sides of an argument, apply them fairly to the dispute at hand and determine which legal cases are on point.

Yet Walker's opinion pretends that the voluminous evidence introduced on the side of Proposition 8 does not exist. It neither acknowledges nor attempts to distinguish the writings of renowned scholars presented at trial in support of Proposition 8, including that of anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss, history professor Robina Quale and social scientist Kingsley Davis. It ignores the writings of legal giant William Blackstone and philosophers John Locke and Bertrand Russell. It even refused to address the fact that Congress, in the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, defined marriage as the "legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife."

Despite ample evidence introduced into the record that only a union of a man and woman can produce offspring (as if that needs proof), Walker's opinion denied the relevance of that biological fact. That difference has been the main reason civilization recognized the uniqueness of marriage as between a man and woman, and why courts have repeatedly relied on that common-sense truth.

Despite voluminous evidence and common sense pointing to the contrary, the judge also declared that opposite sexes were never part of the "historical core of the institution of marriage"; "evidence shows conclusively that moral and religious views form the only basis for a belief that same-sex couples are different than opposite-sex couples"; traditional marriage is an "artifact"; and, also without reference to the monumental evidence to the contrary, that it is beyond "any doubt that parents' genders are irrelevant to children's developmental outcomes."

These assertions appear in the opinion's "findings of fact" section, yet they are not facts. These "findings" derive from arbitrary and capricious non-analysis and are forcefully contradicted by evidence in the court record. No appellate court should allow the ruling to stand.

Having ignored everything courts typically rely on in making sound judgments, Walker concluded that Proposition 8 was enacted "without reason" and demonstrates "a private moral view that same-sex couples are inferior to opposite-sex couples [and are] . . . not as good as opposite-sex couples." Nothing in Proposition 8 supports such conclusions, particularly since California law grants same-sex couples all the benefits and protections that apply in traditional marriage.

People can differ on whether, as a matter of policy, states should allow same-sex marriage. The robust debate on that topic should not be short-circuited by judicial fiat.

Yet, according to the federal district court, Americans such as President Obama, Vice President Biden, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the majority of members of Congress and the 7 million Californians who voted for Proposition 8 are all bigots who have "no rational reason" to oppose gay marriage.

Even the usually liberal U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit has reservations about immediately implementing Walker's exercise in judicial social engineering. A three-judge panel of the court issued a stay late Monday to prevent California's law from being cast aside before a panel can fully review the matter. It was right to do so. The rule of law demands more careful consideration of this important issue than Walker's decision delivered.
