Dear
e-link
Subscriber,
Blessings on the remainder of your summer. Isn't it moving too
quickly?
The consensus at the OSM is that the best way to make August the
most memorable summer month would be to attend the
Mother of Life Conference on Saturday,
August 14th. We'll be there and hope to see each of you. In
fact, we would propose that e-link readers cut-n-paste
the Mother of Life promotion information below into an e-mail
and send that e-mail to every person in their address book,
especially those who would want to know about this historic
event. The last thing we want to hear following the Conference
is, "I wish I had known."
As always, we remind current members and inform new members that
past e-link bulletins and this current bulletin can be viewed at
www.osmelink.org.
God Bless

Remarks - From Deacon Jim and
Nativity Men's Group Members on Serving Incarcerated Youth
“By Faith We Obey the Call”
“For in secret the holy children of the good were offering
sacrifice.” - Wisdom 18:9
“What you did for the least of these, you did for me.” -
Matthew 25: 40
Many individuals and organized groups in our communities do
good works anonymously or at least without seeking recognition.
It can be encouraging, though, to see examples of people who
love God and love their neighbor in a public manner. The
fourteen members of the Nativity Parish Men’s Group, men who
have committed to visiting incarcerated youth on the first
Sunday of each month, provide an ideal example. These men drive
an 85-mile round trip from North County to the Otay Mesa
Juvenile Detention Facility monthly.
Accompanied by some pictures, here are some reflections in their
own words.
“The young men we meet with come to our church service
seeking insight into the Gospel to help them make sense of
their own individual predicaments. Likewise, we ‘ministers’
come to the service seeking understanding of what the Gospel
is saying to us as individuals. This common search for
understanding God’s will is the glue that keeps us connected
while all of us learn to see the face of Jesus in each other.
"You never know where these discussions might go, and you
know it is God
working through us to keep it together. On the way home from
Otay Mesa we reflect upon the things said in each of our
groups, and there is a sense of overwhelming exhilaration.” –
Jim, detention ministry volunteer
“As we all pile into Craig’s van, we eagerly discuss our
interpretations of the Gospel on the trip down and compare
notes about our experiences on the way back. By going on a
mission together that is somewhat out of our comfort zone, a
sense of common purpose and bonding has occurred.
“As we travel we also fill in gaps in each other’s
religious knowledge and spiritual understanding.
“We experience a joy and satisfaction helping these kids
who find themselves in the criminal justice system at such an
early age, often abandoned by friends and family. We also
have learned a lot from the kids, some of whom have surprising
insights and religious knowledge.
“As the Holy Spirit would have it, our
first-Sunday-afternoon-of-each-month ministry has landed us
there on Super Bowl Sunday, Easter Sunday, and the Fourth of
July. The kids and the officers were surprised and
appreciative when we not only showed up on those days, but did
so in fairly large numbers.
“The
kids frequently show their appreciation at the end of services
by including us in their Prayers of Intentions along with
their family and friends.
“Easter Sunday was particularly eventful. We stopped to
assist at an auto accident on the way down. At the Detention
Facility right after we discussed the Gospel and were
discussing Good Friday with the kids, we felt the Mexicali
Easter Sunday earthquake, and the officers told us that
services were cancelled and we had to leave. Then they
changed their minds and said we could stay for our second
group.
“Our drive home was calm and peaceful, and we got home just
in time to have Easter dinner with our families. This was
Greg and Gary’s first Sunday with the ministry. [Not]
surprisingly, they’ve come back for more.” - Charlie,
detention ministry team leader
“This ministry has not only had a very positive effect on
each of us, but also on the men’s group as a whole. A year
ago our pastor, Father Purcell, said that the group would
thrive only if we came together in outreach service. This
ministry clearly does that but actually accomplishes spiritual
and social objectives as well. Before we started detention
ministry Deacon Jim said that this would change our lives.
And it clearly has.” - Craig, detention ministry volunteer
Should you (male or female) or your parish group be
encouraged by these men and want to inquire about serving in
restorative justice or detention ministry in some capacity,
please look at this web site

The Housing Opportunities Collaborative
(HOC) offers assistance to San Diego and Imperial County residents
who struggle with finances, especially when those struggles relate
to their housing needs
In an effort to address the current credit /
mortgage finance crisis and counter some of the prevalent scams, and
to bring free and reliable finance counseling to families and
individuals toward sustaining their home ownership, the Office for
Social Ministry (OSM) is recommending that parishes explor e
utilizing the assistance of the Housing Opportunities Collaborative
(HOC); a local non-profit coalition of HUD approved housing
counseling agencies and fair housing and government agencies. HOC
has been providing housing-related services to San Diego residents
for the past three years in partnership with U.S. Department of
Housing & Urban Development and has offered to extend these services
to our parishes and parishioners free of charge.
The OSM strongly encourages parish leaders to
consider taking advantage of this opportunity to facilitate an
event at the parish that will enable the delivery of the services
provided by Housing Opportunities Collaborative. Meetings and
private consultations with parishioners can be conducted in both
English and Spanish. Following is a sampling of events that are
available to be held at any parish:
- HOME Clinic:
A community project to give homeowners access to legal information
and resources, homeowner receives options, remedies, possible
courses of action, referrals to law enforcement, and, in most
instances, an
assessment
of the emergency nature of the situation. It is a one-stop event
where various non-profits provide homeowners with one-on-one
counseling. The Clinic is usually conducted on a Saturday from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- HOME Workshop:
A 90 minute interactive presentation on current and needed topics
for homeowners like foreclosure prevention and process, home buyer
programs, bankruptcy, short sales, trustee sale, REO, tenant rights,
foreclosure and real estate fraud, etc. The presentations are made
by expert attorneys, experienced housing counselors, honest and
knowledgeable real estate professionals, and officials of
governmental agencies like HUD.
- HOME Outreach:
A booth is set up at church events (after Sunday Masses, at parish
celebrations, at parent teacher meetings, etc.) to provide useful
resources to parishioners.
Please contact Gregorio Estrella, Program
Manager at HOC, at
estrella@housingcollaborative.org or 619-283-2200, ext. 103 if
your parish has an interest in hosting a housing/counseling event.
If you have any questions about the HOC or its services, contact
Kent Peters: 858-490-8324 or

consultations, and all educational materials are available in both
English and Spanish.

Current “Healing the Culture” Total Raised Reaches $36,000

Twenty six out of the one hundred parishes in the Diocese of San
Diego have participated or plan to participate in a broad regional
fundraising effort, “Healing the Culture – Funding the Abortion
Changes
You Outreach,” which is dedicated to raising awareness about the
Web-based resource,
www.abortionchangesyou.com, developed by Life Perspectives to
serve those affected by abortion decisions.
The participating parishes are
part of a community collaborative, “Healing the Culture, San Diego,”
that includes healing ministry directors, diocesan officials, two
culture of life parish coordinators, representatives of multiple
denominations, and Christian business leaders.
The collaborative is currently developing a final media buying plan
that is dependent on how much is raised during the campaign. Market
research will first be conducted to determine the most effective
ways to reach the targeted audiences within San Diego and Imperial
Counties with the available resources. Forms of advertising will
likely
include:
bus, trolley, and mall ads, billboards, web-based advertising,
college and local newspaper ads, and radio commercials.
The OSM would like to thank the
parish coordinators who are participating in this important
fundraising effort and all those who have contributed to the
“Healing the Culture” campaign.
As the campaign is only about two thirds complete, the collaborative
projects a final fundraising total of between $50,000 and $60,000.
To check the total raised to date and to learn more about the
advertising campaign itself (starting in mid-September), visit the

Andrea Bocelli Tells a Very Personal Story about Abortion
www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QfKCGTfn3o
By Dave Andrusko
When the topic is abortion, there's too often a
lot of grim stuff to write about. But not this time. This is
beautiful, poignant news.
A friend forwarded a You Tube entry that had been
sent along to her. It is misleadingly labeled "Andrea Bocelli Tells
a 'Fairy Tale' about Abortion." In fact it is a true story--Andrea
Bocelli's own story.
My guess is that most of our readers are familiar
with Bocelli, whose beautiful tenor voice is a gift from God.
According to published accounts, he'd always had problems with his
sight and eventually was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma. He lost
his vision completely at age 12 following a blow to the head during
a soccer game.
The video, which Bocelli filmed for a pro-life
organization, begins with the 51-year-old Bocelli at the piano. He
is speaking in Italian, with English subtitles. Thanks to my
assistant, Regina Huber, for transcribing his comments.
So, for this occasion I want to tell you a little
story. This is how the story goes: A young pregnant wife has been
hospitalized for a simple attack of appendicitis. The doctors had to
apply some ice on her stomach and when the treatments ended the
doctors suggested that she abort the child. They told her it was the
best solution because the baby would be born with some disability.
But the young brave wife decided not to abort, and the child was
born.
That woman was my mother, and I was the child.
Maybe I'm partisan but I can say that it was the right choice.
And I hope this could encourage many mothers that
sometime find themselves in difficult situations in those moments
when life is complicated but want to save the life of their baby. ….
A lovely word of encouragement. For you, for me,
and especially, perhaps, for a young woman at a very difficult time
in her life.

Buffett Secretly Spending Millions on Abortion Med-School Scheme: NY
Times
By Patrick B. Craine
OMAHA, Nebraska, July 19, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) –
Billionaire investing mogul Warren Buffett has been secretly backing
a campaign to combat the decrease in doctors who are training as
abortionists and to bring abortion into mainstream medicine,
revealed the New York Times this week.
In her NYT magazine cover story, journalist Emily
Bazelon describes how abortion “rights” activists are working to
“recast doctors, changing them from a weak link of abortion to a
strong one.”
The piece, entitled “The New Abortion Providers,”
claims that abortionists and the pro-abort lobby are trying to
dispel the image of the “greedy, butchering ‘abortionist’.” “The
bold idea at the heart of this effort is to integrate abortion so
that it’s a seamless part of health care for women — embraced rather
than shunned,” writes Bazelon.
The strategy, she says, aims at moving abortuaries
away from stand-alone facilities into hospitals and encourages
family physicians to offer abortions within their practices.
She describes two training programs for abortionists
that are central to this strategy. The first, called the “Family
Planning Fellowship,” is a two-year post-residency program designed
to further equip doctors for providing abortions and contraception.
She says this fellowship is now being offered at 21 university
campuses. The second is called the Kenneth J. Ryan Residency
Training Program, which aims to supply medical schools with funds to
train ob/gyn residents in providing abortions. So far, this program
has funded 58 campuses in the U.S. and Canada.
Both programs are run out of the University of
California at San Francisco, and both are directed by Uta Landy, the
former director of the National Abortion Federation. Bazelon spoke
with Jody Steinauer, the associate director of the Fellowship
program, but she said that Landy declines all interviews out of fear
that publicity would scare off potential universities, or their lone
donor.
“The money for the Ryan and the Family Planning
Fellowship comes from one foundation and from one family,” writes
Bazelon. “The donor has chosen to remain anonymous, which helps to
explain why there’s been so little publicity about the pro-choice
strategy of bringing abortion into academic medicine. It has been
covered by a veil of semisecrecy.”
But as the two training programs have grown, this
anonymous donor has become more widely known, she says. “In the
course of my reporting, two doctors who had not done the fellowship
themselves, but who work in universities, volunteered to me that the
money for the programs comes from the Buffett Foundation,” she
wrote.
According to Bazelon, the Buffett Foundation’s tax
records reveal that most of its spending is allocated to “abortion
and contraception advocacy and research.” The Foundation has given
tens of millions to Planned Parenthood and Ipas, as well as millions
to other pro-abortion groups like Catholics for Choice. Buffett has
pledged to give away 99% of his estimated $47 billion assets, with
most of it going to the Gates Foundation, which is infamous for its
avowed emphasis on population control.
Despite Buffett’s and the rest of the pro-abortion
movement’s efforts to bring abortion into the mainstream of
medicine, however, pro-life leaders insist that abortionists are by
nature at the bottom rung of medicine, where debauched doctors end
up when they are too incompetent for any other area.
“No one goes to medical school with the intent of
working in a Planned Parenthood or some other abortion clinic,” said
Mark Crutcher, President of Life Dynamics Inc., last month, after an
Ottawa abortionist was disciplined for his incompetence in treating
25 of his clients. “The wash-outs from the leftovers of medicine
wind up working in these abortion clinics.”
