Dear e-link Subscriber,

May Holy Week bring us all closer to Our Lord in his rejection,
suffering, and death, and may it bring us closer to all those
who, both near and far, like Jesus, suffer at the hands of
others.
As we celebrate e-link's seventh year of publication, the OSM
staff would like to thank all those who read e-link, who
participate in it's highlighted events, and who advance
their understanding of how to re-build a culture of life through
the essays and articles featured in e-link. May we all continue
to grow in wisdom, compassion, and predilection to action.
As always, we remind current members and inform new members that
past e-link bulletins and this current bulletin can be viewed at

Remarks from Kent Peters on Event
Overload
From time to
time, e-link bulletins seem to be overloaded with opportunities
to serve or to learn more about the sanctity of human life and
the promotion of human dignity. This is one of those
bulletins.
In fact, you'll see twelve diocesan-wide events promoted in
the "Key Upcoming Culture of Life Gatherings/Projects"
section below, and they will all take place between April 1st
and May 8th.
Due to a friend's wedding and calendar conflicts for a few of
the events, I'll only be able to attend seven of the thirteen,
but a question remains... What will my attitude really be with
this level of engagement?
To be honest, I know what I'll be feeling and thinking on the
way to each of these events. I'll be whining interiorly. "I'm
too old for this." "I didn't get enough sleep last night." "I
worked all day, what am I doing out in the evening?" "I could
be playing tennis." The negative thoughts will multiply, and
one can only wonder about their origin.
Past experience, however, has always taught me that if I just
press on and give myself to the event and its cause, I will be
blessed and enriched. Like exercise, we rarely want to begin,
but we feel invigorated when finished. I know exactly how I'll
feel driving back to work or home after each of the events.
"Gosh, it was great to see..." "I need to add that to my
prayer." "It was so good to encounter 200 people who care so
much." "We need a write up on that for e-link." "I hope
someone took some decent photographs." I believe these kinds of
thoughts are Holy-Spirit inspired, and they demonstrate that I
likely received what I really needed -participation in
a community that is publicly sharing and acting on its values.
This is how we build the Kingdom of God. It's what we're made
for.
Why am I sharing all this? Only to shamelessly promote the
events highlighted in e-link and to help enrich the lives of
Catholics who have said "yes" to being artisans in the building
up of Our Lord's Kingdom. Come out. Share this calling with
friends. Add a brick to the heavenly castle. Help rebuild a
culture of life and dignity.
Thank you and God bless you. |

voices in “sincere dialogue…and with anxious interest…seeking the
common good.” 1 For the 12th consecutive year, the California
Catholic Conference (CCC) is hosting Catholics from all over
California who are interested in exercising their “faithful
citizenship” in their state’s Capital. The CCC welcomes all who are
interested in meeting with elected officials to speak on behalf of
those who are poor, vulnerable or voiceless.
Please
register promptly and begin to pray for all who will join together
that day – raising our voices as faithful citizens who are working

St. Gianna Beretta Molla Feast Day
Celebration at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 1668 State
Street, San Diego, Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. -
Honoring Marriage, Family and the Sanctity of Life
St. Gianna Beretta Molla was an Italian wife, mother and physician
who is well known for having
refused
to have either an abortion or hysterectomy when she was pregnant
with her fourth child and diagnosed with a fibroid tumor in her
uterus during her second month of pregnancy. As a physician Gianna
knew the risks of choosing to remove the tumor and attempting to
bring the child to term. She chose the life of her child over her
own.
Her heroic witness to the respect owed to all human life was the
culmination of her faithful response to the call to holiness of
life. She is a particular source of inspiration and strength to
spouses and parents who are called to make heroic sacrifices in
fidelity to their vocation in life.
She serves as an inspiring model for physicians and those who
assist them in working to overcome the culture of death that besets
our time and to establish a civilization of life and love.
St. Gianna was referred to as the “Mother of a Family” by Pope
John Paul II on the occasion of
her beatification. She serves as a special intercessor for married
and engaged couples. Countless couples around the world suffering
from infertility were blessed with children after praying for her
intercession or receiving a blessing with her relics.
7:00 p.m. Litany of St. Gianna followed by Mass
At the end of Mass there will be a special blessing with the
relics of St. Gianna.

February 27th Adoption Seminar Uplifts Spirits and
Changes Adoption Messaging
On February 27th, The Association
For Life of San Diego County and the Adoption Center of San Diego,
presented a seminar entitled “When a woman is facing an unplanned
pregnancy…is ADOPTION an Option?” Sarah Jensen, Director of the
Adoption Center of San Diego, brought together a panel of
birthparents, adoptive parents, a grandparent, a teenaged adoptee,
single parents, a foster care worker, and a crisis pregnancy center
counselor. Together they shared stories and tears and enlightened
the group as to the joy, love, hope, redemption, renewal of faith,
and reception of
God’s
blessings that come from the empowering and courageous choice to
voluntarily place a child in an open adoption.
(at left: Sarah Jensen shares message of hope and joy at the
adoption seminar)
Panel members shared personal stories of how God had truly
blessed their lives through open adoption. Birthparents spoke of
the pride they felt at placing their child in a home where he or
she would receive love and guidance from both a mother and a
father. As one woman said, “It was the first responsible, adult
decision I ever made.” The message of the Day? Birth parents are
not filled with regret and sorrow, as the media would lead people
believe, rather, they are empowered by choosing life and a secure
hope for the child’s future.

Another "40 Days for
Life" Completed
The second San-Diego-based "40 Days for Life" Campaign ended on
March 28 with a reception at Calvary Chapel in Vista. Guest
speakers were Sarah Jensen Elhoff of the
Adoption
Center of San Diego and Jessica, a birth-mom who shared her
life-transforming journey that brought her to choose open adoption
for her child. Many pro-life ministries were at hand with
information, and the Ultrasound Mobil Unit was on site available for
tours.
From February 17 to March 28, 2010, San Diego joined hands with
the other 166 locations throughout the U.S.
for another intense 40-day period of constant prayer and fasting,
with the intention of ending abortion and healing the wounds that
abortion has caused in society. Hundreds of San Diegans from
various churches came day after day to pray in front of the abortion
clinic located in San Marcos at 120 Craven Road, the Palomar-Pomerado
Health Center.
The 40-day time frame of the campaign echoes a recurring Biblical
time of transformation and preparation, for both individuals and
communities, to carry out God's plan for his people. The "40 days
for Life Campaign" sets apart such a period.
In God's time, the seeds planted in prayer during the campaign will
grow and provide fruits beyond day 41. Many participants have
committed to continue prayer and public witness at the Craven Road
location throughout the year.
Prayer vigils are held weekly in front of the San Marcos location
on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Prayer warriors are encouraged and welcome to join for either one or
two hours or just for a few minutes.

How We Got from Good Intentions to a Flawed
Bill

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. CAP.
As health-care legislation moves forward toward law,
we need to draw several lessons from events of the last weeks and
months:
First, the bill passed by the House on March 21 is a
failure of decent lawmaking. It has not been “fixed.” It remains
unethical and defective on all of the issues pressed by the U.S.
bishops and pro-life groups for the past seven months.
Second, the executive order promised by the White
House to ban the use of federal funds for abortion does not solve
the many problems with the bill, which is why the bishops did
not—and still do not—see it as a real solution. Executive orders
can be rescinded or reinterpreted at any time. Some current
congressional leaders have already shown a pattern of evasion, ill
will and obstinacy on the moral issues involved in this legislation,
and the track record of the White House in keeping its promises
regarding abortion-related issues does not inspire confidence. The
fact that congressional leaders granted this one modest and
inadequate concession only at the last moment, and only to force the
passage of this deeply flawed bill, should give no one comfort.
Third, the combination of pressure and
disinformation used to break the pro-life witness on this bill among
Democratic members of Congress—despite the strong resistance to this
legislation that continues among American voters—should put an end
to any talk by Washington leaders about serving the common good or
seeking common ground. Words need actions to give them flesh. At
many points over the past seven months, congressional leaders could
have resolved the serious moral issues inherent in this
legislation. They did not. No shower of reassuring words now can
wash away that fact.
Fourth, self-described “Catholic” groups have done a
serious disservice to justice, to the Church, and to the ethical
needs of the American people by undercutting the leadership and
witness of their own bishops. For groups like Catholics United,
this is unsurprising. In their effect, if not in formal intent,
such groups exist to advance the interests of a particular political
spectrum. Nor is it newsworthy from an organization like Network,
which—whatever the nature of its good work—has rarely shown much
enthusiasm for a definition of “social justice” that includes the
rights of the unborn child.
But the actions of the Catholic Health Association
(CHA) in providing a deliberate public counter-message to the
bishops were both surprising and profoundly disappointing; and also
genuinely damaging. In the crucial final days of debate on
health-care legislation, CHA lobbyists worked directly against the
efforts of the American bishops in their approach to members of
Congress. The bad law we now likely face, we owe in part to the
efforts of the Catholic Health Association and similar “Catholic”
organizations.
Here in Colorado, many thousands of ordinary,
faithful Catholics, from both political parties, have worked hard
over the past seven months to advance sensible, legitimate
health-care reform; the kind that serves the poor and protects the
rights of the unborn child, and immigrants, and the freedom of
conscience rights of health-care professionals and institutions. If
that effort seems to have failed, faithful Catholics don’t bear the
blame. That responsibility lies elsewhere. I’m grateful to
everyone in the archdiocese who has worked so hard on this issue out
of love for God’s people and fidelity to their Catholic faith. Come
good or bad, that kind of effort is never wasted. |
