Remarks from Bishop Robert H. Brom

First, a few words on the "40 Days for Life" campaign...

This fall, from September 23 to November 1, our community will be one of 208 cities joining together for the largest and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization in history - the 40 Days for Life campaign.

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life effort that consists of:

-40 days of prayer and fasting
-40 days of peaceful vigil
-40 days of community outreach

(see number 1 in the "Key Upcoming Culture-of-Life Gatherings/Projects" section below for further details)

Dear Friend of Life,

The “40 Days for Life” campaign is a laudable and practical means through which people of faith in North San Diego County can engage in the urgent and necessary work to end abortion.

The campaign will undoubtedly change hearts, minds, and God willing, bring about greater legal protection for life, from conception to natural death.  With due deference to the judgment of our pastors, you are welcome to promote your program within the Diocese of San Diego.

Sadly, there are many pressures in our society that drive women and men to consider abortion.  Each year, more than 250,000 abortions are performed in California, 25,000 of which occur in San Diego County.  As we approach 37 years of legalized abortion in the United States, prayer and fasting for the sanctity of human life is vitally important now more than ever.

I send my greetings and encouragement to those participating in this work of prayer and fasting.  Your efforts imitate the life of Christ, who prayed and fasted for forty days in the desert before beginning His public ministry.

Sincerely in our Lord,

Most Reverend Robert H. Brom
Bishop of San Diego

Key Upcoming Culture-of-Life Gatherings/Projects

Number 1:  (Second Notice)

40 Days for Life is coming to North San Diego County - In San Marcos, from September 23 through November 1, join scores of prayerful citizens in public witness in front of the North County Women's Medical Clinic on 120 Craven Road

This fall, from September 23 through November 1, San Marcos will be one of many cities joining together for the largest and longest coordinated pro-life mobilization in history - the 40 Days for Life campaign.

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life effort that consists of:

- 40 days of prayer and fasting
- 40 days of peaceful vigil
- 40 days of community outreach

We are praying that, with God's help, this groundbreaking effort will mark the beginning of the end of abortion in our city -- and throughout America.

Take a stand for life!

While all aspects of 40 Days for Life are crucial in our effort to end abortion, the most visible component is the peaceful prayer vigil outside a local abortion facility.

You can help make a life-saving impact by joining our North San Diego County vigil at:

San Marcos Care Center, 120 Craven Road, San Marcos CA in the Palomar Pomerado Health Building - corner of Twin Oaks Valley & Craven Roads

40 Days for Life takes a determined, peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their own neighborhoods, for their own friends and families.  It puts into action a desire to cooperate with God in the carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America.

The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities ... and the entire world.  From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection, it is clear that God sees the transformative value of His people accepting and meeting a 40-day challenge.

Vision and mission

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion in America.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40-day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion in America.

The 2009 Life Chain, where the Gospel meets the road…. In Clairemont, along Balboa Avenue, between Genesee and Mount Alifan Drive.  Life Chain signs only - no Graphic Abortion Pictures or signs.  Collect signs for this important event at the Northeast corner of Balboa & Genesee, on the sidewalk just off the parking lot in front of Starbucks.

Please remember, the Life Chain is a prayer service.  Upon arrival, warmly greet your fellow Chainers and then begin to pray.  As we join a thousand LifeChains across America and Canada, let each of us trust wholly in our Lord and not in ourselves or our numbers.

Our own efforts have failed to end or to substantially reduce the numbers of unborn children lost in the abortion holocaust.  May God intervene with power and mercy.  May He forgive our past indifference and shallow commitment.  May He fill us with compassion that we might move the world to embrace the unborn, their mothers, and their fathers.

Web and e-mail-based Resources

CALIFORNIA CATHOLIC CONFERENCE RE-LAUNCHES EMBRACINGOURDYING.COM WEBSITE

The "Embracing Our Dying" web site originated in 2002 to capture the materials used in a series of seminars conducted for parish leadership in conjunction with the Embracing Our Dying Project of the Bishops of the California Catholic Conference.

The 2009 expanded and improved site includes links for current articles, downloadable documents (advance directives, brochures, bulletin inserts), the YouTube of a video made from the seminars held earlier this decade, and directions for finding nearby Catholic parishes and/or hospice facilities.

As recently as 50 years ago, people expected their doctors to expend every effort to preserve life.  Since then, with the advent of ventilators, dialysis, tube feeding, transplants, exotic antibiotics, and intensive care units, efforts by healthcare professionals may be prolonging the dying process rather than preserving life.  Most people can tell a sad story about a friend or a loved one whose death was fear-filled, painful, and lonely.

The California Bishops' website, which has a uniquely Catholic perspective, offers a better way for individuals, families, and friends to approach end-of-life issues.

We hope that the updated website will better serve you and your family as you deal with end-of-life issues.

Please share the good news about this valuable resource for families with any family you know is facing end of life decision-making:

http://www.embracingourdying.com

Special Note...

A poster developed by the Office for Social Ministry to promote the re-launched web site will be distributed to parishes this November.

Kent's Comments on the Kennedy Funeral

Much has been said both pro and con about the decision of Cardinal O'Malley of the Archdiocese of Boston to provide a full and very public Catholic funeral to Senator Edward Kennedy and the Kennedy family.

I am one who battled Senator Kennedy most of my adult life on numerous fronts, fronts basic to the human family, many more fronts than those on which he and I fought together.

My misgivings over the adulation given Senator Kennedy at his funeral were due to the fact that, now, countless members of the Catholic community will come to believe or continue to believe that it is morally acceptable to exclude the unborn from the protection offered the human family, handing pre-born children over to death because they had no political power or were inconvenient to some.

On September 9, 2009, Cardinal O'Malley, via his blog (found just below my remarks), responded to those who were critical of this decision.

In response to the Cardinal’s comments, I can only say...

If only Cardinal O'Malley had been able to share in the paragraph where he mentions correspondence between Pope Benedict and Senator Kennedy that Senator Kennedy had openly and publicly rejected the malevolent portions of his political past and had asked for forgiveness,

If only, at some key moment during the memorial proceedings, in a tactful and respectful manner, something had been said about Senator Kennedy's horrendous political abandonment of the unborn and his rejection of church teaching on sexual morality and marriage,

If only President Obama, understood to be the most strident pro-abortion president in U.S. history, had not been given a prominent role during the funeral liturgy,

...then we might have been able to tolerate what ended up appearing to many Catholics to be the opening of the cause of beatification of Senator Edward Kennedy.  In other words, not only was the evil he perpetrated swept under the rug, but the highlighting of only what appeared to be the better portions of Senator Kennedy’s public life was like conveniently standing on top of the lump in that rug in an attempt to conceal it.

In regard to the Catholic funeral and burial of Senator Edward Kennedy, it was not that it happened but rather how it happened that bothered some of us so much.  Perhaps the lesson we should take away from this event is that Catholic elected officials who currently and flagrantly violate basic human justice and morality in their policy decisions should be appropriately disciplined and, if need be, excluded from the Catholic community - for their own good and that of the faithful.  Then, questions of what to do in death will have been answered clearly during the time that those concerned were still able to communicate.

Finally, I think readers will find the clarity and passion with which Cardinal O’Malley expresses his commitment to the unborn (in the blog entry below) awe inspiring.  I hope he continues to write in this manner.  And may our personal commitment to protect human life be translated into greater courage if, or should I say when, challenging decisions are to be made.

Blessings,

Kent Peters

From CARDINAL O’Malley’s BLOG

Saturday was the 39th anniversary of my ordination to the priesthood, at St. Augustine’s Church in Pittsburgh by Bishop John B. McDowell, who is still going strong today.  In the Church’s calendar, the feast day for August 29 is the Beheading of John the Baptist.  People usually take note when I tell them that I was professed to religious life on Bastille Day, July 14, and ordained on the feast of the Beheading.  Not that I am superstitious.

On Saturday morning I attended the funeral Mass for Senator Edward M. Kennedy.  Father Donald Monan, S.J., former president of Boston College, celebrated the Mass and Father Mark Hession, pastor of Our Lady of Victories in Centerville, preached the homily.  The music was outstanding with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus enriching the liturgy along with mezzo-soprano Susan Graham who later sang an absolutely striking rendition of Schubert’s Ave Maria.  Cellist Yo-Yo Ma graced us with his beautiful solo performance of Bach and later joined Placido Domingo, who sang the Panis Angelicus.  Placido has a superb voice.  I told him how much I like the Zarzuela, the Spanish classical musical theater productions.  His family had a troupe that presented Zarzuelas in Mexico and he promised to arrange a performance.

The venue for the funeral Mass was Mission Church, the magnificent Redemptorist Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help [www.BostonCatholicAppeal.org/missionchurch].  Senator Kennedy prayed often in this church when his daughter, Kara, was stricken with cancer.  It is a church where countless faithful have gone to pray and ask for healing, grace and forgiveness.

In light of these themes, I wish to address our Catholic faithful who have voiced both support and disappointment at my having presided at the Senator’s funeral Mass.

Needless to say, the Senator's wake and Catholic funeral were controversial because of the fact that he did not publically support Catholic teaching and advocacy on behalf of the unborn. Given the profound effect of Catholic social teaching on so many of the programs and policies espoused by Senator Kennedy and the millions who benefitted from them, there is a tragic sense of lost opportunity in his lack of support for the unborn.  To me and many Catholics it was a great disappointment because, had he placed the issue of life at the centerpiece of the Social Gospel where it belongs, he could have multiplied the immensely valuable work he accomplished.

The thousands of people who lined the roads as the late Senator’s motorcade travelled from Cape Cod to Boston and the throngs that crowded the Kennedy Library for two days during the lying in repose, I believe, were there to pay tribute to these many accomplishments rather than as an endorsement of the Senator's voting record on abortion. The crowds also were there to pay tribute to the Kennedy family as a whole.  On the national political landscape, if Barack Obama broke the glass ceiling of the presidency for African Americans, Jack Kennedy broke it for American Catholics.

As a young lad, I saw photographs of both Pope John XXIII and President John Kennedy hanging in the thatched cottages of County Mayo and heard the Gaelic greeting, “God and Mary be with you.” Three of the Kennedy brothers died in service of our country in the prime of life.  And Eunice Shriver, who died just a few weeks ago, was an outspoken defender of the unborn and an apostle of the Gospel of Life.  She taught us all how to love special children and to make room for everyone at the table of life. In 1992, Eunice petitioned her party’s convention to consider “a new understanding” of the issue, “one that does not pit mother against child,” but instead seeks “policies that responsibly protect and advance the interest of mothers and their children, both before and after birth.”

Much of what is noble in the politics and work of the Kennedys had its origins in the bedrock of the faith of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy.  As a young woman she had a profound experience of God’s love that transformed her life.  She strove to communicate that faith to her large clan.  Since the time of her funeral Mass I have kept her memorial prayer card, inscribed with Rose Kennedy’s own words:

If God were to take away all His blessings, health, physical fitness, wealth, intelligence, and leave me but one gift, I would ask for faith – for with faith in Him and His goodness, mercy, love for me, and belief in everlasting life, I believe I could suffer the loss of my other gifts and still be happy – trustful, leaving all to His inscrutable Providence.

There are those who objected, in some cases vociferously, to the Church’s providing a Catholic funeral for the Senator.   In the strongest terms I disagree with that position.   At the Senator’s internment on Saturday evening, with his family’s permission, we learned of details of his recent personal correspondence with Pope Benedict XVI.   It was very moving to hear the Senator acknowledging his failing to always be a faithful Catholic, and his request for prayers as he faced the end of his life.  The Holy Father’s expression of gratitude for the Senator’s pledge of prayer for the Church, his commendation of the Senator and his family to the intercession of the Blessed Mother, and his imparting the Apostolic Blessing, spoke of His Holiness’ role as the Vicar of Christ, the Good Shepherd who leaves none of the flock behind.

As Archbishop of Boston, I considered it appropriate to represent the Church at this liturgy out of respect for the Senator, his family, those who attended the Mass and all those who were praying for the Senator and his family at this difficult time.  We are people of faith and we believe in a loving and forgiving God from whom we seek mercy.

Advocating for the dignity of life is central to my role as a priest and a bishop. One of my greatest satisfactions in my ministry thus far was helping to overturn the abortion laws in Honduras.  The person who answered my call for help with that effort was Dr. Bernard Nathanson, who had been a prominent leader in NARAL and the abortion rights movement.  His own change of heart led Dr. Nathanson from a practice of providing abortions to becoming one of the most eloquent exponents of the pro-life movement.

Helen Alvaré, who is one of the most outstanding pro-life jurists, a former Director of the Bishops´ Pro-life Office and a long standing consultant to the USCCB Committee for Pro-Life Activities, has always said that the pro-life movement is best characterized by what it is for, not against.  We are for the precious gift of life, and our task is to build a civilization of love.  We must show those who do not share our belief about life that we care about them.  We will stop the practice of abortion by changing the law, and we will be successful in changing the law if we change people’s hearts.  We will not change hearts by turning away from people in their time of need and when they are experiencing grief and loss.

At times, even in the Church, zeal can lead people to issue harsh judgments and impute the worst motives to one another.  These attitudes and practices do irreparable damage to the communion of the Church.  If any cause is motivated by judgment, anger or vindictiveness, it will be doomed to marginalization and failure.  Jesus’ words to us were that we must love one another as He loves us.  Jesus loves us while we are still in sin.  He loves each of us first, and He loves us to the end.  Our ability to change people’s hearts and help them to grasp the dignity of each and every life, from the first moment of conception to the last moment of natural death, is directly related to our  ability to increase love and unity in the Church, for our proclamation of the Truth is hindered when we are divided and fighting with each other.

President Obama and three former presidents attended Senator Kennedy’s funeral.  I had the opportunity to speak briefly with President Obama, to welcome him to the Basilica and to share with him that the bishops of the Catholic Church are anxious to support a plan for universal health care, but we will not support a plan that will include a provision for abortion or could open the way to abortions in the future.  The President was gracious in the short time we spoke, he listened intently to what I was saying.

Democrats and Republicans sat side by side in the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, praying for Senator Kennedy and his family.  It is my sincere hope that all people who long to promote the cause of life will pray and work together to change hearts, to bring about an increased respect for life, and to change laws so as to make America a safe place for all, including the unborn.
