Dear
e-link
Subscriber,
Membership for e-link has reached 1,159. We welcome new members
and hope they find the service opportunities offered in e-link
worthwhile.

Let us all hold in our prayers, especially today, the victims
who lost their lives or were injured on September 11, 2001 and
their families. May God continue to bless our Nation.
The Article/Statement for this issue of e-link is dedicated to
Bishop Brom's statement regarding the settlement of the 144
sex-abuse cases in the Dioceses of San Diego and San Bernadino.
Please keep the victims who were compensated by this settlement
and the mission of our local Church in your prayers over the
coming weeks and months, and may Our Lord continue to bless the
countless efforts in our diocese offered to alleviate the
suffering of those in our community who live on the margins or
whose very lives are under threat.
As always, we remind current members and inform new members that
past e-link bulletins and this current bulletin can be viewed at

God Bless!

Dioceses of San Diego and San Bernadino
Remarks from Kent Peters
Secularists Undermining What's Best
Why is it that Secularists need to undermine what is most
beautiful in Christianity? The answer is really simple.
Secularists, first and foremost, are bent on removing any trace
of religion from public life, especially elements of religion
with a Judeo-Christian orientation. They believe that a world
free of religion will be a world at peace, a world with no need
for charity because it is overflowing with justice.
Secularists have also learned a valuable public relations lesson
in this modern era. When one can successfully denigrate what is
best in the opposition and do that in the eyes of the general
public, the opposition will shrink. It will decline in
both membership and in financial support of that membership, and
that which is left, the mediocre, tends not to be able to fill
its place. Those embattled stand there seemingly empty-handed
and embarrassed having lost what is most precious.
And so, secularists will try to destroy that which is best in
Judeo-Christian organizations, knowing their members will be demoralized,
especially members who know little about their own faith
tradition.
Case in Point. It has been learned through the private writings
of Mother Teresa that she spent most of her adult life
in ministry feeling absolutely empty in the face of God. She
used words like, "abandoned," "lost," and "alone."
Secularists are now calling Mother Teresa a fraud. She was one
who preached about and asked others to live out what she was not
experiencing in her own life. Yes, let's pull down the statue
of "St. Teresa of Calcutta" before it's even placed on its
stand. Let's stick it, in this case, to the Catholics.
Mature Christians, however, immediately understood what this
revelation about Mother Teresa really meant - greater
sanctity, pure and simple.
Follow the link below to a short essay by Dinesh D'Souza, writer
for the "To the Source" web site. He gives the most edifying
explanation as to what these revelations in Mother Teresa's
writings really mean.
http://www.tothesource.org/8_28_2007/8_28_2007.htm
Take heart. Secularists will not win on this one, and we'll
live on to serve another day.
If the secularists ever do win, however, I would hate to live
in their world cut off from the channels of God's grace that
bring life, mercy, healing and real justice into our broken
world.
Thank you and God bless! |

Number 1: It's time to sign up for the new Catholic Legislative
Action Network

Now is the time. Our local diocesan advocacy
efforts will be linked to the efforts of the eleven other dioceses
in California. Using Cap Wiz, an innovative online tool that
provides legislative data and methods to successfully manage
interactions with key law and policymakers, we will be able to
better influence legislation crucial to the Church's social
mission. As we have for the past four years in this e-link
bulletin, the new network will concentrate on promoting both human
life and dignity.
The California Catholic Conference (CCC), the office in Sacramento
that serves the public policy agenda of the California Catholic
Bishops, will assist with the Cap Wiz program. The CCC will also
help set the California legislative agenda. The local San Diego

The Life Chain is a prayer service. Upon arrival warmly greet your

intervene with power and mercy. May He forgive our past
indifference and shallow commitment. May he fill us with compassion
that we might move the world to embrace the unborn, their mothers,

Life Perspectives' Life Walk is Coming...
It’s time once again for Life Perspectives’ Life Walk! This easy 2
mile event is really a walk in the park: Kit Carson Park in
Escondido and Harry Griffen Park in La Mesa, Saturday, October 20th,
at 10:30 a.m.

Bring the whole family and enjoy clowns, balloons, bubbles, a picnic
lunch, and a chance to get to know other life-minded people from
around San Diego County. This fun event celebrates what Life
Perspectives and our San Diego community have done over the past
year to create a Culture of Life – and refreshes and restores us to
continue in the coming year.
Life Perspectives’ programs and projects are
directed toward informing and educating
the
community, which is the first component of the Pastoral Plan for
Pro-Life Activities by the United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops.
The Whole Life Curriculum (www.wholelifecurriculum.com)
helps parents and educators instill in their students the knowledge
that each individual is valued by God. This transformational
approach affirms the value of others and cultivates the desire to
positively impact their world.
Life Perspectives’ free, interactive, multimedia
speaking engagements at public and private schools around San Diego
County equip students to consider serious life issues, make healthy,
responsible decisions, resist peer pressure, and help those who may
be facing an unexpected pregnancy.
The Abortion Changes You ™ outreach raises awareness
of the impact abortion
has
on the mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings, and friends through
print ads, a ground-breaking website, and a book (available late
2007). These components have been carefully designed to help those
impacted to begin the healing process and find local healing
resources.
All the promoters, walkers, and sponsors of this past year's Life
Walk ’06 made it possible for all of this to be accomplished!
In 2008, Life Perspectives will complete the Whole
Life Curriculum grades 7-12 rooted in Pope John Paul II’s Theology
of the Body; increase the outreach to local schools; and take the
message of hope into the homes of students, educators, and parents
with the creation of an interactive website at
www.LifePerspectives.com
(coming soon!).
Thank you to the 37 parishes already participating
in Life Walk ‘07, and to the Knights of Columbus at St. Timothy, St.
Elizabeth Seton, and St. Michael in Poway who are underwriting this
event – allowing pledges to go toward making these 2008 goals a
reality!

September 15, 2007 - starting at 9:00 a.m.

800
Miles, 15 Counties, 3 Months, 1 Goal
Death Penalty abolitionists from throughout California embark on a
five hundred mile foot journey from San Diego to Sacramento to raise
awareness about the death penalty.
Who:
Death Penalty Abolitionists from across California
What: Walk to Stop Executions kick off
demonstration and prayer
When: Saturday, September 15 at 9:00 a.m.
Where: San Diego County Hall of Justice, 330 W
Broadway
Why: To persuade District Attorneys not to seek
the Death Penalty and to
raise awareness about the Death Penalty.
The Walk to Stop Executions
is an event like no other in California. Organized by California
People of Faith’s Richard Carlburg with additional support from
Death Penalty Focus, the walk will bring activists together to
spread their death penalty abolition message from San Diego to
Sacramento and every inch of ground along the way.
As a symbol of the fight to end capital punishment, walkers will
carry a lit "Candle of Hope", signs with messages against capital
punishment, and death penalty abolition literature to pass out along
the way.
The event kicks off with a
demonstration and prayer at the San Diego County Hall of Justice,
330 W Broadway on Saturday, September 15 at 9:00 a.m.. At each
county seat along the path (as well as San Quentin State Prison)
walkers and local activists will meet for a demonstration to
encourage each county’s District Attorney not to seek the death
penalty in their cases and also to bring public attention to the
issue of
capital
punishment itself.
San Diego resident and human
rights activist Jeff Ghelardi will walk from San Diego to Sacramento
to protest the death penalty in California. Ghelardi will take
three months to finish the "Walk to Stop Executions," which will
cover 800 miles and 15 counties. Ghelardi, a veteran of the Marine
Corps and Peace Corps, says that "I have been a lifelong opponent of
the death penalty and hope this walk will open people's eyes to the
injustice of capital punishment.” Jeff will be walking with Orange
County resident Richard Carlburg, who led the first walk against
executions in 2000.
Richard Carlburg, who also
led the first walk against the death penalty in 2000, is Vice Chair
of California People of Faith Working Against the Death Penalty.
Richard is an Air Force Academy graduate who earned a Bronze Star
while serving in Viet Nam. After his retirement from the Air Force
he enjoyed a successful career in the aerospace industry. He will
be reporting regularly from the walk on the Walk website
http://walktostopexecutions.blogspot.com.
Supporters can assist the
walkers and the cause of ending executions in multiple ways:
1) Walk for a 1 or 5 mile segment of the course. See the website to

Come celebrate the 90th anniversary of the last Fatima Apparition
and pray to end the scourge of abortion in our community

Join fellow parishioners for Public Rosary and Procession on
Saturday, October 13th, 2007. The day will start with Mass at Our
Lady of the Rosary Church in San Diego at Noon and continue with a
procession with Our Lady of Fatima Statue to Family Planning
Associates (abortion center) at 6th Ave. and Palm St. - across from
Balboa Park.
Join us as we pray the Rosary and sing hymns to Our Blessed
Mother while processing to the abortion center where we will
continue to pray all the mysteries of the Rosary for an end to the
terrible scourge of abortion.
Those who may be unable to walk the full distance (exactly two miles
- mostly uphill) may drive to Family Planning Associates and join in
the Rosary there. Participants are asked to abstain from talking
during the procession and Rosary, creating a greater disposition for
the many graces needed in the battle to end the injustice of
abortion.
We will be adding our prayer to at
least 1,000 other public Rosaries throughout the United
States on that day - Sponsored by America Needs Fatima

The Interfaith
Committee for Worker Justice is looking for a new organizer for
North County - Might it be you?

JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: San Diego North County Organizer/Healthcare Advocacy
Coordinator
(20-40 hours per week, to be determined based on mutual
interests and
availability.)
Start Date: Job open as soon as possible; will be open until filled.
Reports to: The Coordinator is accountable to Rabbi Laurie Coskey,
ICWJ Executive
Director
The Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ) of San Diego
County seeks a North County Organizer/Healthcare Advocacy
Coordinator. The Coordinator reports to Rabbi Laurie Coskey,
Executive Director, and works closely with Bet Lawrence, Program
Coordinator.
Background:
The ICWJ is a membership organization established to bring the power
and energy of the faith community's moral authority to local
struggles for worker justice. In
partnership
with low-wage workers, our campaigns bring visibility to the
struggle of hard-working individuals and working families trying to
make ends meet in San Diego. In San Diego County alone, more than
400,000 people lack access to healthcare; nearly 7 million
state-wide. Because of this crisis, especially for working
families, ICWJ works to address this crisis through our workplace
and policy campaigns. To help take a stand for legislative reform,
ICWJ has joined It’s OUR Healthcare!, a coalition of consumer
advocates, seniors, health advocates, communities of faith, and
labor united to ensure that the people of California’s voice is
heard in the debate over healthcare reform.
Job Summary:
As ICWJ staff, the Coordinator will lead the outreach, education,
organizing, and advocacy with San Diego’s North County Coastal and
North County Inland faith communities focused on the crisis in
affordable healthcare and directed toward increased access to health
care coverage among North County service workers through workplace
campaigns and health care policy initiatives at local and state
levels. Because our work often deals with the lives of low-wage
workers and their families so intimately, our campaigns are
constantly evolving, which means we have to be flexible and ready to
shift gears when the well-being of workers is at stake.
Send your resume to Bet Lawrence, Program Coordinator at the ICWJ,

In light of the settlement of sexual abuse cases, it
seemed appropriate to highlight the U.S. Bishops' web site dedicated
to the protection of children and youth
What is the
Office of Child and Youth Protection and What is its Function?

In Dallas, 2002, at their Annual Meeting, the U.S. Conference of
Catholic Bishops drafted a landmark document in response to the
crisis of sexual abuse of children in the Church. This document,
setting forth their agreed upon responsibilities in combating the
problem, was entitled the Charter for the Protection of Children
and Young People.
The charter specifically created the Office of Child and Youth
Protection and assigned to it three central tasks:
- To assist each diocese and eparchy (eastern Rite Churches) in
implementing "Safe Environment” programs designed to ensure
necessary safety and security for all children as they participate
in church and religious activities
- To develop an appropriate compliance audit mechanism to assist
the Bishops and Eparchs in adhering to the responsibilities set
forth in the Charter
- To prepare a public, annual report describing the compliance
of each diocese and eparchy to the Charter’s provisions

A PASTORAL STATEMENT by Bishop Robert H. Brom
September 7, 2007
To the Pastors and People of the Diocese of San Diego
Today the Diocese of San Diego, along with the Diocese of San
Bernardino, reached a settlement with some 144 people who have filed
lawsuits regarding sexual abuse. For 111 cases the Diocese of San
Diego will be paying $77,071,350 and our insurance carrier, Catholic
Mutual, will be paying $75,650,000, for a total of $152,721,350. In
addition, we will be paying $30,269,098 for 22 cases involving
members of religious orders, part of which we hope to recover from
the communities. The Diocese of San Bernardino, with help from
Catholic Mutual, will be paying $15,134,552 for 11 cases.
The total settlement for the Dioceses of San Diego and San
Bernardino and seven religious communities amounts to $198,125,000.
It covers all 144 cases ranging from 1938 to 1993, with the majority
occurring in the 1960’s and 70’s.
To realize this settlement, we have found it necessary to petition
for release from bankruptcy court. We filed for Chapter 11
reorganization in the hope that we could accomplish a fair and
equitable compensation for all of the victims of abuse without
disrupting the core mission of the Church, especially in the life of
our parishes and schools. Since this effort failed, we have accepted
a plan for the compensation of victims, even though the total
settlement amount actually takes us beyond available resources and
will result in some damaging consequences for the mission of the
Church in this diocese for a number of years. In resolving the
financial ramifications of this settlement parish assets and
contributions designated for specific diocesan ministries and
programs or projects will be respected.
We knew from the outset that the level of compensation initially
offered for the lawsuits would be a point of negotiation within the
bankruptcy process, just as it had been before bankruptcy. In time,
an amended plan of reorganization would have been filed with a
higher offer of compensation.
Some have accused the diocese of engaging in delay tactics in order
to avoid our responsibility to victims. I want to assure you, on the
contrary, that we have done our best all along the way to bring this
matter to conclusion with justice for all involved, but many forces
beyond our control have complicated the process.
Hopefully, the settlement that has been accomplished will serve to
begin a healing process, especially for the victims of abuse, but
also for the Church. Once again, I want to apologize to those abused
and their families and, in the name of the Church, to beg their
forgiveness.
All of us in the Church must continue our efforts to insure that the
Church is a safe and happy place for children and young people. And,
we must embrace together the challenge we face for reorganization
and renewal.
